What is Chip Tuning?

Chip Tuning or Chipping is simply remapping by another name, but involves the physical removal of the program chip from the main ECU in the vehicle and either re-programming or replacement with a new chip modified with a Quantum remap. Technology developments mean that Chip Tuning is rarer now, but is still the only way to programme certain vehicles. Nowadays most remaps are carried out via the diagnostic OBD2 Socket, or direct into the ECU using special adaptors on the bench.


There are many companies that sell add-on tuning boxes under the pretence that they are ‘chips’ which is utter nonsense. These boxes simply attach to the common rail and increase fuel rail pressure to increase power and torque, they do not and will not ever work as effectively and efficiently as a full OBD remap, or remap by chip tune.

Benefits of Chip Tuning

Generally, any car equipped with an engine management system can be tuned, which includes both petrol and diesel engines. However, chip tuning or remapping produces best results on turbocharged, or supercharged engines. Raising the turbocharger or supercharger boost pressure, allows for much higher gains in power to be achieved, when combined with the correct ignition timing and fuelling adjustments. Normally aspirated (non-turbo) engines will only gain a significant improvement in power if the manufacturer also offers the same engine in a significantly detuned state by ECU Programming software alone. With a remapped car you can expect:

  • Smoother power delivery making town driving much easier with fewer gear changes

  • Improved fuel consumption on diesel engine vehicles

The other main benefit of chip tuning will be a reduction in fuel consumption. With the extra torque especially at the bottom of the rev range you will see a fuel saving, as it will require less throttle input to maintain motorway speeds, you can drive in a higher gear at a slower speed as well as helping significantly when fully laden, towing or on gradients and even in start stop traffic.

Our file packages are available in monthly bundles, with additional “Bolt-On” credits if you find that you have used up your usual regular allocation early. Single file credits are also available for occasional customers.

All dealers have access to the same pricing structure and get the same level of service – which remains consistent in quality: we do not offer a cut-back “no frills” file service.

Our files room is open is open from 7am to 7pm GMT Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm GMT on Saturdays and Sundays; and we run an hour of hours service on weeknights until 9pm GMT.

We have a transparent price structure – the price you see is the price you pay for a standard, “stage one” tune – whether you’re modifying a car, truck, tractor, or boat. You can choose between our standard, high power, or eco files, along with any combination of DPF, EGR, or speed limiter solutions which are available in most instances.


Account facilities are available if you want to pay monthly by Direct Debit, or retained debit card, with up to 45 days free credit.

DPF Service

We are at the forefront of providing software for DPF solution on supported vehicles - this can be a valuable income stream and is included in your tuning file cost.

Speed Limiter Bonus

The package also includes speed limiter removal on supported vehicles.

White Label File Service
  • Joining the Quantum Tuning dealer group is good for your business, but this might not suit everyone, so we can supply you on a confidential basis, completely transparent to your customer base.
  • This is something we currently do for dozens of well known companies around UK, Europe and the rest of the world.
  • If ever questioned about the source of your files by a customer, you simply tell them that you employ a top file writing company, under contract.
  • You still get the benefits of our technical support and training. If you are in an area not covered by an existing dealer, you will also receive customer leads.


We can offer a couple of ways of joining our dealer group, which route you choose depends on your current level of hardware ownership.


To get you started, purchase a KessV2 for £1700 + VAT (where applicable) which includes six file credits. This is a “Slave” tool, connected to the Quantum master.

File packages are available in bundles of 6, 14, or 25 with prices starting at the lowest cost plus VAT per unit.

How does this compare to our competitors? Whilst you may be able to purchase a Kess tool more cheaply from other suppliers (who sometimes sell them at an initial loss and then refuse to allow them to be transferred to an alternative supplier) you are likely to be tied in to a higher file price. A £75 price tag per file with a moderate turnover of 100 files per year would cost an additional £2500 when compared Quantum dealership.


If you have Master tools then we can supply you files straight away. If you have an Alientech or CMD Slave tool it needs to be transferred to our Master first; but if your existing supplier refuses to transfer the tool, or wants to charge a large fee, then it can be more cost effective to have a new tool.


We encourage every dealer to invest in an Alientech K-TAG system for doing bench work on ECUs that have been removed from the vehicle. For those that don’t have this facility, we provide a bench programming service for £100 including the file: simply send or bring the ECU into us, and we will turn it round on the same day.
